About the Book

Life – An Odyssey To put forth Buddha’s view on life’s journey: Faith is nourishment, Virtuous deeds are a shelter, Wisdom is the light by day and Right mindfulness is the protection by night.  If a man lives a pure life, nothing can destroy him.  If he has conquered greed, nothing can limit his freedom.  Life is a mystery for those who keep on running behind their expectations, ignoring the need of exploring their soul and happiness therein.  The changing culture of an individual and the society towards unhealthy social environment makes it necessary to find the right path for the journey of life.  The idea behind Life – An Odyssey is to explore the different aspects of life, which everybody experiences in their day-to-day living, though of importance, these are largely ignored due to our so called ‘busy schedules’.

Life – An Odyssey: Time Tested Mantras Providing Solutions to Life’s Problems, is the selective collection of 35 musings by Dr. Manish Maladkar.  The musings in this collection throw light on the hurdles in the journey of life and the various ways to bring about happiness from these hurdles in ourselves and also spreading it to others.  Each chapter is focused on different challenges, which everyone encounters in their lifetime and the introspective paths to overcome these challenges.

The art of life is to know how to enjoy a little and to endure much. There is one mantra that will help you down the path of life, and that is, "This too shall pass." Whenever you are in a difficult situation, just go on repeating the mantra. It will help you tremendously. Grey skies are just clouds passing over. To dream anything that you want to dream – that is the beauty of the human mind. To do anything you want to do – that is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limits – that is the courage to succeed. Courage is very important, like a muscle it is strengthened by use. All serious daring must begin from within. As soon as you feel too old to do a thing, do it. Or you will just remain a statistic, born to consume resources. Research has pointed the narrow distance between us and other living organisms. We now know that humans are 57% similar to cabbage, 51% similar to yeast and amazingly 98% genetically similar to chimpanzee. One human is 99.9% similar to another. Only 0.1% difference makes us unique and to make that difference lies entirely within you. A small story exemplifies the 0.1% difference. Once a wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman. "I’ve been thinking," he said, "I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone."

To achieve even what the traveler achieved is significant.
